How do I make my internet connection faster?

The college I go to blocks ports (not sure which ones) to prevent us from gaming or watching porn. Aside from the fact that this is pretty awful considering that it's a private school that we pay quite a lot to attend, this makes doing anything on the internet, even checking your email, near impossible unless it's 4 AM. Any ideas on how I can scan which ports are still open? Or make my internet faster in any way?
