99 Ford Taurus Air Conditioner Knob?

the knob that controls my air flow (low, medium, high) broke off and i got a new one...but theres a little peg in there that the knob has to attach to...the peg is pushed back to far to attach it...anybody know what i would have to do to fix this....im FREEEEZIN and it takes a LONG time to defrost...lol thanks

by the way ive tried tweezers, a pen, everything to get it out but that hole is just too small to get it out...do i have to take off the whole front??
