At least on social issues, we're still a center-right nation; most people are moderates, but there are more conservatives than liberals. Canada and Western Europe are either centrist or center-left, so we're to the right of them by varying margins. A typical American Christian right-wing politician would not stand a snowball's chance in hell of getting elected even in the most conservative areas of places like France and Spain.
On fiscal issues, I think that we're moving to the left fast. A majority of Americans now believe that government should do more to help people as opposed to less, and we just voted for a candidate who promised to raise taxes on some people over a candidate who promised to cut them for everybody. But for now at least, we're still to the right of most other industrialized nations on fiscal issues as well.
