Do grades matter to future employers?

I am a college student with a 2.8 GPA. I'm not satisfied with that and would like a 3.0, at least. I'm a first semester junior. I know I have time to get my grades up, but if I don't, do grades REALLY matter to employers? I would just hate to go into an interview with a 2.8 coming out of a cheap, unknown state school... it makes me kind of cringe. Will I be alright? Is it more of the grades, or extracurriculars and qualifications, and just that you GOT the degree? Thanks.
