Why is organized religion a threat to humanity?

In a question I posted about 10 minutes ago a bunch of people said organized religion is a threat to humanity and prohibits intellectual growth or something like that, but how is it? If I want to go to church how does that affect my intelligence? Can anyone explain to me why organized religion is bad? Also please don't drone to me about the horrible things that some extremists did years ago
Religion gives desperate people hope, stressed people peace of mind, among other things. How can that be bad?

neil 9/11 is extremists most muslims don't support that stuff. Therefore that was not organized religion that was a very very extremist branch of islam

Religion does not encourage critical thought.

You do not have to be religious to be a spiritual person or to believe in God.
