Should the U.S. Census add religion as a category?

The U.S. Census once had religion as a category. It no longer does and so now all religious statistics we get are from churches themselves which may only count active practicers. Would it be a good idea for the religion category to be added back to the census so we could have more complete data, including accurate geographic data of a religion by neighborhood so marketers could use it accordingly?
why does the government use race data, income data or all of the other things they ask on the census. the census is meant to be the official statistical base of the country

Oh, it will happen. won't be a good thing, but it will happen.... go in peace... God bless
