Well, there are a number of things that could be going on. First of all, obviously, if you are a smoker of cigarettes/pot, it could just be a smoker's cough.

Also, what color is the mucus? Yellow/green/tan means there is a URI (upper respiratory infection.) Since you don't have any runny nose/cold like symptoms, it is most likely bacterial if the sputum *mucus* is one of those two colors. That can easily be treated with antibiotics. Make sure if this is the case you do get an antibiotic so you do not get pneumonia.

I don't know where you live, but changes in season can cause allergies, which can lead to post nasal drip. This would lead to coughing in the morning. An anti-histamine over the counter would cure this pretty easily.

I doubt you have COPD or pulmonary disorders, since you are probably young.

    More Serious Causes:
If you are coughing up pink mucus, it could be fluid in the lungs (pulm. edema) which means you need to go to the ER ASAP.

If you have SOB (shortness of breath) and wheezing, it could be asthma, which would require inhalers, so see your doctor.

Bloody mucus/sputum can mean tuberculosis or a pulmonary embolism, once again go to the ER! If you are having chest pains or swelling of the extremeties (especially the legs) it is most likely an embolism, which once again I doubt since you are younger.
