What would you think of a family that owned a '99 Benz SUV and an '08 Lexus

Your Benz is a decade old. Upgrade.
Nothing, maybe they go a good deal. maybe one is a perk at a job. We had a 2000 Land Rover and a 1996 BMW, but only because they were the best used deal at the time. And let me tell you, I'll never get another luxory vehicle again. Everything cost 10x's more to fix. Now we both have new Nissan's.

It's tough when you are rich...
i've seen families owning nice mercedes, audi's, and lexuses but park them in a carport right in front of their 2 bedroom 1000 sq ft apartment next to a railroad track. that's california for you though. as long as you look like you're well off even if you're not, that's all that matters out here. my image of that family may differ than someone from say the midwest for example.
