What are signs of a 1973 VW Beetle Vacuum leak?

Leaks usually appear it idle. To test for leaks, get a can of Gum-out, and spray it all around the intake manifold, carb, and hoses. Any fluctuations in idle speed indicate a leak. Usually, the carb on these require a major rebuild after all these years, or at least a thorough cleaning. Also, be sure to have your valves adjusted properly by someone who is competent.
