Sometimes the Blu Rays have special features that aren't on any standard DVD's.
For example, on I Am Legend, all the Blu Ray disks came with the alternate ending, which only some special edition disks had.

It's different for every movie. usually the back of the box lists the special features. Just compare the list with the SE disk.
