Slow College internet connection, how can I make it faster for windows Vista?

I bought a new laptop and I play a game on it in Warcraft III Frozen Throne. My college campus' internet is too slow and the game is always lagging. What can I do besides download something online?

1.)Reset the wireless router by using the power switch on it or by unplugging it and plugging it back in.
2.)Place the wireless router in an ideal location. The higher it is, the better, but don't put it near metal objects.
