Can eating old peanuts on an empty stomach give you gastritis/stomach upset?

I ate old peanuts with coffee for breakfast and a little while later I had diarrhea, stomach pain and nausea. I am wondering if the peanuts were rotten and could cause this. I am 58 and have never had a reaction to peanuts before.
