I got a DivX dvd player for christmas, looking to download to my usb stick and watch movies that way. Wondering if there is a certain file type i need when downloading from places like mininova etc?

You don't get files form places like that. Those are file pirate sites.
You would rip your own DVDs, record from TV, or from a camcorder, then convert to the appropriate format.
