What is the difference between a HD DVD player and a normal DVD player?

if I buy an HD DVD will it only play HD DVD players or can I play a normal DVD on it? Can I play and HD DVD(disk) on a normal DVD player? HD DVD and Blue Ray are the same??

    I'm so confused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

okay first of all HD DVD player has better colour and you just buy normal DVDs for it. A blue ray is a whole different thing the only thing that can play blue ray disks are ps3 adn blue ray players

hd dvd are no longer used. it was a format war much like vhs and the other things. blue ray players use a blue ray (hence the name) to read disk. blue has a lower frequency than red so it can read smaller areas of the disk. this means more data can be stored on the disk and therefore you can store videos which are 2 hours long and play at 50mb/s (hd).
