How can religion be called truth?

Shouldn't the word truth be reserved for things like gravity, and the sun rising the east and setting in the west? Things that are verifiable and clearly true whether you believe in them or not.
How can truth be relative? If you believe that the truth is that the sun rises in the west, you can believe it all you want, but that doesn't make it true.
