Belt drive turntables have less rumble fut more flutter. Direct drive turntables have less flutter but more rumble. In the day of turntables, the Japanese preferred direct drive while the British and European audiophiles preferred belt drive.
Actually both do a good job and the belt drives are generally cheaper.
