"..cuz i would like too hook my stereo to my tv i"

The AV Receiver replaces your stereo.

Your stereo is a 2-channel device to power 2 speakers.

But DVD players and HDTV shows all give you 5.1 speakers worth of sound so you need a new 'stereo' that knows how to handle 5 speakers and a self-powered subwoofer.

Look into something like the Onkyo TX-SR505 receivers for about $380. It will over-whelm you with all the features & connections, but as you add things to your system - you will be grateful you bought such a flexable unit.
