I have a 1997 ski doo mach 1 w/o electric start, and I was thinking about buying a electric shield to fit my current helmet. My question is does the snowmobile have to be equipped with electric start to allow the helmet shield defroster to work, or is it wired in similarily to the handwarmers???

All you need is a 12 volt electrical system. If your sled has a 12 volt battery, you should be good to go. One small caution though, the charging system on your sled was not designed to power much in the way of accessories. Prolonged use of the heated grips and shield/visor could drain, or damage the battery.
