Unlocked iPhone, do I need a plan?

Okay, say I was to purchase an unlocked iPhone from eBay; would I have to purchase a contract, or would I be able to just put my pre-paid SIM into the phone and be done with it? I am in Australia btw, and the SIM card I would be most likely to use would be a BOOST one.
