I want to jailbreak a 2.2 firmware iphone 3g and I don't want to go through the hassle of backing everything up. It has never been jailbroken before. Are there also any cons that come with jailbreaking besides voided warranty?
To jailbreak an iPhone, you need to download a jailbreaking program, such as Quickpwn, (can be found here: www.quickpwn.com).
Now download:
The 2.2 iPSW (http://www.megaleecher.net/taxonomy/term/4692)
Bootloader 3.9 (http://iphonefreakz.com/firmware/BL-39.bin)
Bootloader 4.6 (http://iphonefreakz.com/firmware/BL-46.bin)
(http://iphonefreakz.com/iphone-firmwares/ for anything else you may need)
Now open QuickPwn and follow the instructions.
Also Jailbreaking does nothing but unlocks the phone and allows for 3rd Party Applications. I have a jailbroken 2G phone and I saw no difference between mine now and mine from when I had AT&T other than the fact that I can download and install the apps.
Another note is you can always restore your iPhone at any time through the Reset function in the Settings menu or through iTunes. And you can still use your AT&T SIM card whether you jailbreak it or not.
A rumor has it that you may need a special SIM card to unlock the iPhone however. I have no idea whether this is true or not though.
