What is the difference between DivX and WMV files?

I'm just getting the hang of making better youtube videos.
When I go to download clips from sites it asks if you want to download a DivX file or a WMV file. What's the difference and which should I choose? I have a brand new macbook with version 3.0.4 of safari internet.

They are based on different ways of compressing videofile. WMV is more broadly used as it is free for every PC, DivX gives better compression and thus either better quality for the same filesize or a smaller file with the same uqality. Just play around a lot and you will find the differences yourself and learn a lot. I would in general use DivX or even better H264.
