iPhone comes with 2 years Cingular contract in US, so you'd have to buyout the contract (i think 175$) as well if you buy the phone, as otherwise, you will have to pay cellphone bill for 2 years.( cheapest being i think 80$monthly). This is all in addition to what you pay for the iphone itself.
Once you get the phone, you can request the wireless providers to supply the code to unlock, and use it in India
I know it works in Chennai, but you still cant use the 3g services as Indian wireless providers dont supply it.
