I recently had a mechanic friend change out my clutch because I was hearing a short metallic grinding sound in the low RPM range of 1st and second gear. The sound wasn't occurring all the time and didn't appear to be causing any problem with the car but I though it would be a good idea to change the clutch since I had 115,000 miles on the car.
When we got to the pilot bearing my mechanic realized that he didn't have some special tool to get the old pilot bearing out. He didn't think it made a big deal either way but another friend of mine said that there's a good chance the pilot bearing is making the sound.

Is there a chance the pilot bearing is making the sound and do I need to take the clutch out again to get to the bearing?

Are there any other things I can do to diagnose the problem?
