Yes, good car, very economical, well made, but can be expensive to maintain. Find a good local independent garage & use them. NEVER, EVER use a VW dealer unless you like throwing money away.
Make sure the car's had it's cam belt changed at the correct intervals; a belt & tensioner change can cost up to £500, so take that into account when looking at prices.

Contrary to popular belief, insurance costs aren't that different between the bottom few groups: Going for a 1.2 litre car may only save you £100 year or so.

well ive been driving for a year and 6 month now, i used to have a 1.4 that cost 1400 for my first year, and i got a vauxhall vectra 1.9 CDTI 6 months ago and payed 2200 for insurance, so all i can say is if you want a 1.9 for your first car be prepared to put your hand in your pocket as it will be 3000 min

a 1.9 engine could be a little big for you and will no doubt bump up your insurance.

You should really be looking to get a 1.2 - 1.6 litre engine!
