Is it wrong to join a church/religion for the perks?

Just so you can socialize, or get assistance, or free stuff, etc... Even if the whole time you're secretly laughing at the craziness of it all?

Is it wrong to pretend to believe?

Before you judge, it's not me who's doing this. I'm Agnostic, leaning towards Atheism, and I will not compromise my position for certain benefits.

I was in desperate need of some help a short time ago, and a "friend" of mine suggested hitting up the local churches for freebies. I refused.

Oh, on three separate occasions, I joined a church because I was interested in seducing a young woman who attended that church. Wicked man, am I not?

It's wrong to go as far as joining and "pretending" to believe...it's not wrong to ask a church for help, even if you are atheist. My church would still help you if it was in our reach. And we wouldn't try to "convert" you either...you don't have to be a member of most churches to still attend their social gatherings. It helps to show up with a friend who IS a member, but at our church, we would be happy for the company so long as you were there for peaceful reasons.

Our church doesn't give cash blindly to people just because they ask, mostly, we will point you in the direction of public assistance or even give you a ride somewhere if you need it, or buy you food if you need it.
