For aircraft, what is the radio reception like over the mid-Atlantic?

More specifically, what is plane-to-ground radio traffic like over the mid-Atlantic? What bands are used, what stations (ie NYC to London) are talked to? What type of radios are used?

Also, what about aircraft flying mid-Pacific or to/from Antartica; how do they handle radio traffic?

Traditional voice communication is not really available. Instead pilots communicate using HF long range radios and give position reports. These position reports are plotted and the progress of aircraft is monitored. There is not really a whole lot of chatter, but voice communication is available over the entire ocean.

Hey,

As far as I know transoceanic flights communicate using the high frequency band. Rather than the very high frequency band commonly used during domestic flights. The reason is because HF radio can bounce of the atmosphere and travel many thousands of miles to land based radio stations. Unlike VHF that has a much smaller range.
