Why do some automatic transmissions have "hunting" problems?

Is it possible to get rid of it? Thanx for any answer.

I'd like to buy a 4-speed Toyota Matrix with the A246E super electronically controlled tranny. It's got 12000 miles on it and sometimes (not often) it has some hunting problems going downhill. Is it normal or not?
