volume coming from "headphones" & "speakers"?

when i plug in my headphones a problem occurs.i can hear the volume come out of the headphones & computer speakers.i've been trying to figure out why & how to fix this.i really do not know what to do about my problem.i've never had this problem before & would much appreciate help.
