How can my macbook connect to the internet via ethernet cable?

I have a Macbook (Mac Os X Version 10.4.11) and I have connected it to the internet source(the jack in the wall; don't know it's specific name) with an ethernet cable. My room mate has a PC and was able to get online, but my mac will not connect. Is there anything I can reconfigure or do about this? Thank you.

make sure your mac doesn't have an assigned ip already..

apple --> System Preferences --> double click network icon --> double click ethernet.. make sure the configure IPV4 drop down says.. Using DHCP..
