I'm going to Japan for a week and I want to buy an iphone there because I heard that iphones are cheaper there... Can I just buy the iphone unit there and insert my own sim card when I get home? And does anyone know how much it is exactly in Tokyo or Kyoto?

I'd say no. The I phone is through vodaphone and you have to sign a contract in order to get one. Usually they won't do this unless you have a gaijin card (which means you have to work here and get a visa). Even if you got a job and worked here for a year the phone wouldn't work anywhere else as the phones aren't compatable anyway.
