verizon texting questions?

I sent a text to two people without verizon and neither texted me back so i'm not sure if they got them or not.

Their messages say "sent" instead of "delivered" as the texts to verizon people say. Does that mean they still got them?

Also you need to put the area code in, right? But, do you need to put a 1 before the whole number? Ex. 1-717-354-4263

If it read Sent, than it went thru ok. Usually you don't have to press 1 or use an area code before a number on verizon. Try sending one to yourself and see. Good Luck!
