No country.
At the time of the battle at San Jacinto Texas, where Sam Houston and his "Texans" defeated Santa Anna (900 Texans to 1,200 of Santa Annas troups), Houston was commander-in-chief of the armies of Texas.
That Battle secured Texas' independence. In the fall of the same year (1836), Houston was elected "First President of the Republic of Texas".
Texas joined state hood in 1845.
The United States helped not.!
As Governor in 1861, Houston was strongly opposed to the secession of Texas from the Union. Because he was much in the minority on this issue, Houston was removed from office in March of 1861, ending his illustrious carrier in public service.
