You dont have to have at&t for owning an iphone. If you are planning on switching the service providers i suggest get your iphone unlocked (if you already own one) or if you dont own one right now just buy an unlocked iphone 3g which are available.

Like DHRU said get your iPhone unlocked which then allows you to use it thorough any service provider or network not just AT&T. To see how you unlock your iPhone just type how to unlock iPhone on google or on YouTube for step by step instructions. Careful though, you might end up bricking your iPhone, if you do this then Apple nor AT&T will replace your product, because both of the companies do not approve unlocking phones. It invalidates your warranty. SO, do be careful. -_-
