College University Wireless internet safe to log in?

at my college campus there's free wifi internet. I am wondering will it be safe to log into my email account or any other accounts using the school unsercured network internet? Will it be safe as long the website is legit and has the sercurity lock on the bottom of the page? will i get in trouble if i play online poker on my break while using the school's internet? thanks
