is gossip girl the book series like the show?

I heard that they were similar (but I haven't watched the show or read any of the books yet!)

i've read some of the books, and watched some of the episodes- they're a little similar but not really. a lot of the characters have differences from the the books. personally- i prefer the show better, and i'm the kind of person that likes the books better than the movies.
