I have heard that Judo was not created as a combat sport?

and that it auctally had a do and a focus on pratical self defence and all this other stuff.... what happened? is this type of judo still around if so whats it called and could you explain the history of the change and this earlyer version?
ok i know of judos relation ship with jujitsu and so on i am asking about kano's original intentions for the art aside from physical education and sport
