I have a truck but I am nervous!?

For my first car, I am temporally using a 1992 GMC Sierra Pick Up 6 Cyl. with 135,000 miles. I know the truck needs a new transmission, which I am looking for if anyone can help. I am nervous since I have to drive through not so great of an area to go to school, I am nervous about breaking down, what should I have done to this truck before I start using this as a daily driver. It's about 20 miles each way so a total of 40 miles everyday, most of the time I think I will use back roads to avoid the town. Also, does anyone have any tips on how to drive this truck in the snow, I heard it can be difficult, it's a automatic. Also is it safe to go on bumpy back roads?

i've had my permit since March, and I drive the truck with my parents all of the time

well, if you'll drive the truck daily, you should practice driving a little bit slow and yes, it is safe to go on bumpy back roads but then again, you must drive slow. =]
