I have 26 x 1.9 tires and have been given a few new boxes of 24 x 1.5/1.7 tubes. Are they compatible or should i save them to trade for tubes that match my tire size?

Even if the tubes were 26 x 1.5/1.7 I would not use them. a 24" tube will not fit a 26" rim....now that I'm on it, why are we still talking in inches about these things?
