Is it true you can't make custom ringtones work on Motorola v3a?

I have tried to add custom ringtones to my Alltel Motorola V3a. They told me I could when I bought it. Now they tell me the software has been changed. I guess it has. I can get the ringtone to play on the phone, but in the menu the place where you apply it as a ringtone is gone. Does anyone know of a work around? I have sent the question to Motorola and Alltel. Neither one has replied. What is the point of buying or making ringtones when you can't use them.

I have used Motorola Tools and have loaded ringtones on my phone. They will play on my phone. I just cannot make them work as a ringtone.

No you just need the disc to be able to put them on the phone
