    A boat travels 24 miles upstream in 3 hours . It takes 3 hours to go 36 milies...

    ...downstream.? What are the 2 linear equations, what is the speed of the boat in still water and what is the speed of the current.

    /
    24=3(b-s)
    36=3(b+s)
    solve
    b=10
    x=2

    X = boat speed
    Y = river speed

    X-Y = 24/3
    X+Y = 36/3

    from first equation
    X = 8+Y

    substitute into the second equation

    8+Y+Y = 12

    solve
    Y = 2
    X = 10
