The car has only 154K miles and just recently, sputters when idling and acclerating--it feels as if there isn't a clean flow of gas to the engine--as if the gas is getting there in spurts. Is there a way to trouble shoot the problem and possibly do the repair myself, without having to spend mega-bucks at the Lexus dealership?

Sure you can, I assume you have your own diagnostic tools. I would first take your fuel pressure gauge and see what the fuel pressure is on the rail, and compare it to the specifications. If that is good, hook up your scanner and start the vehicle. Check for anything and everything that could cause problems.
