is footwork essential in any combat sport?

is footwork the base of your training,

i am orthodox, so sometimes when i step to the side, my right foot crosses my left foot very briefly and then my left foot folllows, i hav seen many boxers do this in the ring, i dont know it is a bad habit, and if it is how can i break it

its one of the most important things in combat sports, knowing how to plant your feet how to use effective movement etc etc.
