How do you activate the New iPhone 3G?

So im getting an iPhone 3G From the states on Friday, Ithasnt been activated and is still sealed and has the at&t sim in it. I heard that you can activate it through iTunes you need to just enter the IME Number and It activates it. Is this true. And if you cant are the any "Hacks" for this yet???
 
My housemate has just got one of these and all he had to do was plug it to the PC and followed the on-screen instructions in iTunes. If I remember right you only have to give your Mobile No. It should set up automatically You will have to register the phone with Apple and possibly give your credit/debit card details but you will not have to pay anything. I am in the UK but I'm pretty sure its the same wherever you are.
I've not heard of any hacks yet to unlock or anything like that, though I wouldn't have thought you'll have to wait too long
