I have cable.? My player does not have a connection for my cable and I bought something that is for the cable, but still can't video.

got a vhs/dvd player, hooked up as instructed, but not able to record tv shows.

It sounds like your VHS/DVD player is just that...a player. If the device has a tuner, you should be able to record to tape. Most likely it's just a player.
