    There is an animal whining?

this is in South Florida and it sounds too big for a squirrel.
in my backyard I don't know what it is but it sounds like a young mammal.

we think its a baby but when we go near it gets quiet

I'm not sure if you live in a forested area or not, but I have to tell you this story.

My parents house is in a very wooded, rural area. One night, I was sitting by their open window listening to the night, and I heard what sounded like a boy screaming/crying. I was so upset about it, and my parents listened to it. Whenever we would call, can we help you, it would pause, but wouldn't answer. It would just continue. We asked a neighbor and they said it was either a bob-cat, or another type of cat.

It could be a cat in heat or giving birth.
