internet and emails on a PDA?

im getting a PDA but id like to know..they say you can check your emails anytime anywhere..but you'll need a wi-fi connection, sooo that means il have to be either at home using a wireless router or USB adapter(considering a purchase of one) or in my local macdonalds..thats handy isnt it :/ or can you check them anywhere but in a basic form, such as the crappy old WAP on mobiles. or can you have to pay a monthly fee to get internet access ANYWHERE. if so how much would it cost monthly and how would i go about purchasing and setting it up.

    thanks for your time.

    Ok first
With windows mobile 6 or newer you can check your email in text or standard html format.
You can do that with any internet connection
The reason you would want to check them in text format is if you have a data plan from the phone company that has a limit on it such as 5 or 10 mb because it uses less data.

Connected to wifi the internet is free to use on the phone
If you are using the cell companys data plan it costs around $30.00 a month per phone for unlimited in addition to text and voice plans.
But you can access the internet from anywhere you have a phone signal.
Also on most you can tether it to a laptop and use it as a modem so you can get online with the laptop

A standard pda with no phone capability can't be used for an internet connection except through wifi ,bluetooth etc
