Question for Jewish people, my friend always greets Jewish people with Shalom

Alakim he says that is the? proper way to greet Jews, similar to how Musims greet eachother. Everytime he greets someone with that they look at him funny. I think that is not true, can someone shed some light on it for me? Thanks
