Internet on desktop (emachines) is not working...?

when i plug in the internet cord into my desktop the lights don't come on (the lights that show its connected usually orange and green). when its in nothing comes on, and when i connect the same cord into my laptop my it picks it up like nothing... (it works on laptop). i never had a problem with it before i would use the internet on it all the time then it just stopped working. whats up with it.
