Is making witnesses in a trial swear on a Bible a concession to religion--or a...

...superstition about a holy book? Is it just a superstitious move to get simple people to spill the goods in the presence of a holy object? (=coercion)

It used to be that people believed in the 'good book' and knew to lie was a sin which was against the commandments but now many don't want to do that anymore.
So the courts have something called affirmation.. you affirm that what you say is the truth.
Of course that means nothing at all.
