Is Blu-Ray worth it?

I am getting well over what I need for financial aid for college. I am also getting a tuition. If my sources are correct, I should be receiving the money that would have paid for my tuition, ie the grants.
Anyways, I am planning on purchasing a Dell Inspiron Laptop with Blu-Ray capabilities. I have never used it.

Is it worth it?

I chose the upgrade that allows me to not only watch blu ray movies, but also burn them.
